Our History

Since 1967

The teaching of Sociology at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) began with the establishment of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters in 1896. While UST awarded graduate degrees in Sociology in the 1950s, the undergraduate Sociology program was formally introduced in 1967 under the College of Liberal Arts (Batan & Samaco, 2013). Over the years, the program has undergone various curricular changes, with the most recent update aligning with CHED Memorandum Order 40 (2017), catering to K-12 graduates. The new curriculum ensures high-quality instruction in core Sociology courses, including theory, research methods, and specialized fields of study.

The Department of Sociology at the University of Santo Tomas continues to grow through the dedication of its faculty.
